Young Professionals on IEEE Global Facebook page
Although IEEE GOLD is now Young Professionals, pay dirt came May 22 to volunteers of this Affinity Group across Canada through high profile coverage on the Global Young Professionals Facebook page. Heralding the launch of the Global Entrepreneurship Program, the item links directly to a ground-breaking article from the IEEE Canadian Review.
“From GOLD to Young Professionals” features excerpts from a panel discussion of savvy technical entrepreneurs that took place last October as part of Technical Entrepreneurship Mini Conference (TEMC) 2014, organized by Toronto Young Professionals. A follow-up will be held later this year; check here for upcoming Toronto events. The article also presents the insights of six accomplished Canadian Young Professionals, and the vision of Global Young Professionals Chair Mario Milicevic for its entrepreneurial offerings. Congratulations to Mario (IEEE Toronto Section) and all of IEEE Canada’s Young Professionals Affinity Groups for their innovative activities. Kudos as well to the editorial team of the IEEE Canadian Review; this kind of IEEE global exposure is a “first” for the publication.
A posting on May 21 features a photo including IEEE Southern Alberta Section (SAS) Young Professionals Chair Tushar Sharma in attendance at International Microwave Symposium (IMS) 2015 for the Young Professionals Seminar. The SAS Young Professionals group has been very active under Tushar’s leadership in activities related to the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society, which hosts the annual symposium. In particular the group created a students, teachers and researchers (STAR) initiative to spread awareness of radio and microwave education to schools across Alberta including a First Nations community. The group also hosted a number of other innovative events/activities in 2014 earning it the best Canadian Young Professionals group of the year.
Humans of IEEE (May 25 posting) is a volunteer effort to “share, communicate and celebrate IEEE volunteers,” according to the group’s Facebook page. IEEE Canada’s own Dave Kemp is amongst the select group of volunteers to be profiled (Feb. 9) since the group’s formation in 2014. With more than 50 years of volunteer service to IEEE both in Region 7 and worldwide, it’s not hard to see why! Dave’s most recent international IEEE contributions are through the Volunteer Leadership Training Program in which he was a mentor in both Regions 7 and 10.
